REASONS AND MITIGATIONS FOR CHANGE MANAGEMENT FAILURE:ARTICLE ONE

Organizational transformation is something that happens on a daily basis. The difficulty is in implementing and controlling manufactured change in a planned and focused manner while staying within a certain deadline. Changing the flow of a river over many years in a given direction takes a lot of work. The consequences of constructing a rudimentary dam without considering its downstream influence can be disastrous. Barriers for effective change management are discussed in this article (Dickson, 2020).

Strategic Shortcomings

A good plan is the foundation for successful change management. You must understand why you want to change, what the expected outcome(s) will be, who it will affect, and how you want to change. Many change management procedures fail due to simple logistical or tactical issues being ignored, or because the team is under-equipped.

The SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Obstacles, and Threats) analytical framework is a good place to start when developing a plan.

  • What are the unique strengths and weaknesses of your team, and how to use them in your change management strategy ?

  • What threats or roadblocks are preventing you from implementing change?

You can't plan for every eventuality, but identifying problems early on may save you a lot of worry in the long run. Or, even worse, a transformation project that fails.

Underestimating Scale and Scope

What will it take to bring about the organizational transformation the management is aiming for?

As with most big initiatives, achieving success frequently takes more resources and time than first anticipated. Many process transformation efforts have failed due to an overestimation of scale, a lack of resources, or the passage of time.

  • Make a resource plan ahead of time. Outline the resources you'll require, when you'll require them, and for how long.

  • What is the magnitude of this shift? Is it a small-scale organizational change that will only affect a few people or a large-scale organizational change?

  • Use a project management system to monitor and manage those needs rather than trying to retain everything in your head.
